Egypt

Our trip to Egypt

We took our trip to Egypt in 1995, it was during the summer (Egypt is extremely hot during the summer). Egypt is situated on the Mediterranean to the north and the Red Sea to the east. Most cities are situated near the Nile river since the remainder of the country is mostly desert. Yet this desert is visited by millions of tourists yearly, I'll get into that later.

The people

Egyptians are very friendly people, they smile most of the time and seem to enjoy themselves no matter what they're doing. Even the poor and unfortunate ones seem to be smiling, some say it's to forget their bad financial situation.

Egyptians are very proud of what their country has accomplished so far. However most of them have little or no knowledge of their ancient history. It seems that foreigners and local archeologist are mostly interested in the old and ancient Egypt.

The language is Arabic mixed with a local dialect. People of middle and upper class speak 2 or 3 foreign languages (English, French and Italian).

Hotels

You can choose to stay in a small and inexpensive hotel or 4 or 5 star International hotels, like the Hilton, Sheraton and others. Adventurers (like myself) will choose to stay in a small hotel. I spent most of the time outside the hotel, so I didn't see the point in spending a lot money on it. With the money I saved, I ended up buying many presents for myself, family and friends.

The Pyramids

The pyramids of Egypt are simply amazing! Pictures or movies don't do them justice, you HAVE to see them. These things are HUGE! Made up of very large shaped rocks, only then did I understand why archeologist can't seem to agree on how they were built. One cannot imagine how man can built such things without any electro-mechanical power. There are three main pyramids, I say main because there are others that were started but never finished. The best time to view the pyramids is right before sunset right until dusk. They also have light shows in the evenings.

The weather

The weather was very hot! Daily temperatures were up in the 90s (Fahrenheit) make sure you bring light clothes, however you may choose to buy yourself some clothes there, it is very cheap and Egyptian cotton is famous worldwide.

Conclusion

Would I recommend it? Yes! Egypt is definitely worth the trip. Millions of tourists can't be wrong. Did you know that 50% of all archeological findings are in Egypt?!!!
